About

Art Rooted in Heritage

A chuum is a traditional portable dwelling used by the Indigenous peoples of Northeast Asia. Shaped like a conical tent, a chuum is more than a shelter: it is a symbol of warmth and belonging. It represents home and the heart of family life. Inside, people gather around the central hearth – a place where tea is always hot, stories are shared, and generations connect. It embodies protection from the harsh climate, hospitality, and the intimate, timeless bond between people, land, and tradition.
CHUUM carries this spirit forward. Just as a chuum gathers people around its warm, glowing center, CHUUM brings together the symbols and creations of Indigenous artists. Each piece reflects a living tradition – shaped by ancestry and centuries-old craftsmanship. By connecting these artists with those who seek authenticity, beauty, and meaning, CHUUM becomes a meeting place where culture is honoured, preserved, and shared.
Our Story

Chuum has been made possible through the support of the UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund, whose commitment to innovation and northern collaboration has helped transform the project from an idea into a space that celebrates Indigenous art and culture while connecting it with audiences worldwide.

This project is a fully Indigenous-led initiative, created and guided by Indigenous peoples. From website development and design to social media and operations, every aspect is guided by Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and values.
