About the Artwork
Olonkho is the traditional heroic epic of the Sakha people. Passed down orally through generations, Olonkho tells stories of heroes, ancestral worlds, spirits and the struggle between good and evil.
The epic is traditionally performed by olonkhohuts, skilled storytellers who combine spoken narration, singing and distinctive vocal styles to bring its characters and stories to life. More than a form of entertainment, Olonkho preserves the history, worldview, values and spiritual traditions of the Sakha people.
In 2005, Olonkho was proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
